Woke Up to a Broken Pipe? Here's What to Do First

Few things can throw your moing into chaos like waking up to find water gushing from a broken pipe. Whether it’s a burst pipe in the basement or a steady leak under the sink, water damage can spread quickly and cause costly repairs if not handled right away. While calling a plumber is your top priority, there are important steps you should take immediately to minimize damage and keep your home safe until professional help arrives.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply

The first and most critical step is to stop the flow of water. Every homeowner should know where their main water shut-off valve is located—usually in the basement, garage, or near the water meter. Tuing off this valve cuts water to your entire home and prevents further flooding.

Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

Woke Up to a Broken Pipe? Here’s What to Do First

If the broken pipe is connected to a specific fixture, such as a sink or toilet, you may be able to tu off the local shut-off valve instead. Either way, act fast to keep water damage under control.

Step 2: Tu Off the Electricity (If Needed)

Water and electricity don’t mix. If the leak is near electrical outlets, appliances, or wiring, shut off power to the affected area from your circuit breaker. This precaution can help prevent electrical shock and fire hazards. If you’re unsure whether it’s safe, wait for your plumber and electrician to assess the situation.

Step 3: Drain the Pipes

Once the water is shut off, open your faucets and flush toilets to drain any remaining water from the pipes. This step relieves pressure in your plumbing system and reduces the risk of additional leaks.

Step 4: Contain the Water

The sooner you start controlling the water, the less damage your home will sustain. Use buckets, towels, or mops to soak up standing water. Place a container under smaller leaks to catch dripping water. If the leak is significant, consider using a wet/dry vacuum to extract water before it seeps deeper into flooring or walls.

Step 5: Protect Your Belongings

Move fuiture, electronics, rugs, and valuables out of the affected area to prevent water damage. If heavy fuiture can’t be moved, place wood blocks or aluminum foil under the legs to keep them out of standing water.

Step 6: Document the Damage

Before cleanup begins, take photos and videos of the affected areas. This documentation will be valuable for insurance claims and can help your plumbing repair service determine the full extent of the damage.

Step 7: Call a Professional Plumber

Once you’ve taken these immediate precautions, it’s time to call in the experts. A professional plumber can assess the situation, stop the leak for good, and recommend whether you need a repair or a full broken pipe replacement.

Don’t delay—water damage gets worse over time. Mold can begin forming within 24–48 hours, and structural damage to walls, floors, and ceilings can escalate quickly. That’s why having a trusted plumbing repair service on speed dial is essential.

Step 8: Start Drying the Area

While waiting for the plumber, continue drying the area as much as possible. Open windows for ventilation, set up fans, and use dehumidifiers if available. This reduces the chance of mold growth and speeds up recovery.
