Tips to Prepare Your Home for Hurricane Season

Hurricanes are an imminent threat to homes and other properties. Being prepared for the hurricane season can help you minimize the impact of the storm. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we’ve compiled some tips on how to prepare for the hurricane season.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

If you don’t have an emergency kit, now is the time to assemble one, in preparation for the aftermath of a hurricane. An emergency kit should include basic disaster supplies such as a flashlight, spare batteries, a fire extinguisher, prescription medications, mosquito repellent, important documents, safety and personal items, water supply, and many more. Do not wait until a hurricane waing is issued to prepare an emergency kit. Get ahead of the crowd, and gather emergency supplies in advance to avoid the rush.

Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.

Brick Township, NJ

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

Tips to Prepare Your Home for Hurricane Season

Invest In a Generator

Storm winds can knock down power poles, resulting in massive power outages. The last thing you want to experience is living in a house without electricity for days or even weeks. It’s advisable to invest in a standby generator, just in case there’s a power outage. A standby generator can be a lifesaver, especially if you have kids. You’ll need the help of an electrician to choose a generator that will meet your household’s energy needs.

Board Up Your Windows

Windows are at a greater risk of damage from flying projectiles or falling tree branches. It’s recommended that you install window shutters to prevent your windows from breaking. Alteatively, you can nail thick plywood over the outside of your windows. You should also consider hiring a roofing company to secure and seal your roof.

Perform a Plumbing Inspection

The hurricane season can take a toll on various components of your plumbing system, especially if you’ve neglected routine maintenance. Getting a professional plumbing inspection before hurricane season can save you from expensive water damage to your home. Call in a professional plumber to inspect your entire plumbing system, including water lines, sewer lines, exterior faucets, sump pump, and other components. Make sure they carry out all the necessary repairs and ensure everything is in good working order.

Know Where the Main Water Shut-Off Valve Is Located

Pipe damage and water damage are common occurrences during the hurricane season. If you experience a plumbing emergency such as a burst pipe, you should be able to tu off the water to prevent potential water damage. This is why it’s important to know where the main water shut-off valve is in your home. The main water valve is typically located within 3 to 5 feet of where the main water line enters your home. It may also be located near the front foundation wall, in the basement, crawlspace, or near the end of your property line.
