Signs It's Time to Replace Your Water Heater

When your water heater breaks down or becomes less efficient, your normal household routine may come to a grinding halt. Although professional water heater repair can help you prolong the life of your water heater, eventually, the unit will need to be replaced. Here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we specialize in water heater repair, tankless water heater installation, and water heater replacement. If you’re not sure if you should replace your water heater yet, here are signs that it’s time to start shopping.

Your Water Heater Is Old

A tankless water heater can last as long as 25 years, while traditional storage tank water heaters last between 8 and 12 years. If your water heater has reached the end of its lifespan, it’s time to start shopping for a new unit. Even if the unit is functioning properly after it has reached the end of its lifespan, installing a new water heater is recommended, as it will save you money down the road.

Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.

Little Silver Township

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Water Heater

The Hot Water Tank Is Corroded

If your hot water tank’s inner lining is corroded, it is likely time to replace your heater. Corrosion is a sign of significant damage to the tank, and attempting to repair the tank will only provide a temporary solution, and further issues may arise. You’ll know your hot water tank is corroded if you’re getting discolored water. Replacing a corroded water heater is an effective way to maintain your home’s water quality and prevent potential water damage down the road.

Rising Heating Bills

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, hot water accounts for about 18% to 25% of the heating energy used in a typical home. An older or less efficient water heater may use more energy to achieve the desired water temperature. If your heating bills are rising without any other explanation, it may be time to replace your water heater. It’s advisable to call an experienced plumber to inspect the unit and determine if a replacement is necessary.

Undersized Unit

Are you consistently running out of hot water quickly, especially during peak usage times? Is your water heater struggling to maintain the desired temperature? These are clear indicators that your water heater is not adequately sized to meet your household’s needs. An undersized water heater may also take an excessively long time to reheat water. If your water heater is unable to handle your household’s hot water needs, it’s advisable to consult with a professional plumber. They can assess your hot water usage, evaluate your current water heater’s capacity, and install an appropriately sized unit.

Frequent Repairs

Frequent repairs usually point to underlying problems or the deteriorating condition of the unit. Repeated water heater repair costs add up quickly and may not be worth it in the long run. There’s no point in sinking money into a unit that’ just going to cause more problems down the road.
