When you hire a plumber to carry out plumbing installations or repairs in your home, you can feel lost if you don’t understand the terminology your plumber is using. Knowing plumbing terminologies allows you to communicate more effectively with your plumber. You can accurately describe the issues you’re facing, ask questions, and understand the solutions proposed.
A shut-off valve is a simple device used to control and stop the flow of water within a plumbing system. It allows homeowners and plumbers to easily tu off the water supply to specific fixtures, appliances, or sections of the plumbing system. Shut-off valves come in handy during maintenance, repairs, and emergency situations, as they provide a way to isolate and control the flow of water without affecting the entire building's water supply.
It was a late Saturday night. We had a super stubborn clog in some old galvanized pipes. Mr. Rooter send out Phil. Phil was great! He found the problem pretty quick. With determination and professionalism he final got it cleared out. I would recommend Mr. Rooter and Phil to anyone! He even cleaned up. We are so happy we choose Mr. Rooter!
We had a plumbing emergency and found Mr. Rooter while frantically searching for a 24-hour plumber. We feel like we hit a gold mine. Not only did we get a timely response. Everyone at Mr. Rooter was friendly, professional, competent and went above and beyond. Our plumber, Phil, was extremely helpful and gave us tips we could use moving firwars. Not to mention, the cost was extremely reasonable.
Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.
Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.
I just wanted to say James did a great job at my house. Excellent service, professional and very nice. Thank you so much for helping me with my plumbing problem. Did wonderful job.
I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.
A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.
You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!
Here are some of the plumbing terms that every homeowner should know:
This is a metric used to measure the volume of water released when a toilet is flushed. In other words, it’s a measurement of the amount of water required to flush a toilet in gallons.
This is a U-shaped bend typically found beneath sinks and other fixtures that have drains. The main function of a P-trap is to create an airtight seal that prevents sewer gas from backing into your home.
A closet flange, also known as a toilet flange, is a pipe fitting that attaches the toilet to the floor and connects it to the drainpipe.
This is a flat rubber or fiber ring used to create a watertight or airtight seal between fixtures. Gaskets are typically used in pipe joints, flanges, valves, toilet components, faucets, and fixtures to prevent leaks and maintain the integrity of the components.
This refers to the amount of water that flows through a pipe or plumbing system per unit of time. It’s often measured in gallons per minute (GPM).
This is a rubber ring used to create a leak-proof seal between connections. O-rings are used in a variety of applications, including faucets, valves, pipe connections, toilets, and pumps.
Also known as a hose spigot, a hose bib is a water faucet on the outside of your home where you can attach your garden hose, sprinkler, or other outdoor water-related equipment.
As the name suggests, a backflow preventer is a valve that’s installed on water pipes to keep water flowing in one direction. This valve works to prevent any backflow, thereby preventing contamination of clean water.
Also known as a vent pipe, a vent stack is a vertical pipe that runs from a plumbing fixture up through the roof of the home. The vent pipe provides an entry point for air and an exit for odors and sewer gases. It also helps maintain proper drainage by preventing airlock and negative pressure.
This is a type of filtering appliance designed to remove calcium and magnesium from the water supply coming into the home, thus reducing its hardness. This appliance is installed at the point where water enters a home’s plumbing system.
