Is Your Water Heater Failing? Don't Ignore These Red Flags

Your water heater is one of the most important appliances in your home. It works quietly in the background—until it doesn’t. When a water heater starts to fail, the signs may seem minor at first, but ignoring them can lead to sudden breakdowns, water damage, or even higher energy bills. Knowing what to watch for can help you act quickly and avoid costly repairs or replacements.

1. Inconsistent or No Hot Water

One of the most obvious signs of trouble is inconsistent water temperature. If your water is suddenly lukewarm, takes too long to heat up, or runs cold altogether, your water heater could be struggling to keep up.

Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

Is Your Water Heater Failing? Don’t Ignore These Red Flags

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we help homeowners identify and solve plumbing problems before they get worse. Here are the most common waing signs that your water heater might be on its way out and what you can do about it.

This issue often points to a failing heating element or sediment buildup inside the tank. A licensed plumber can determine whether a simple water heater repair or a full replacement is needed based on the unit’s age and condition.

2. Strange Noises Coming from the Tank

A water heater should operate relatively quietly. If you start to hear banging, rumbling, or popping noises, it's usually a sign of sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. As water heats, the trapped sediment hardens and causes the tank to overwork, leading to noise and potential damage.

Ignoring these sounds could result in cracked components or leaks. A plumbing repair service can flush the tank or replace damaged parts before the issue escalates.

3. Discolored or Rusty Water

If you notice rust-colored water coming from your hot water tap, your water heater’s tank might be corroding from the inside. This is especially common in older tanks where the anode rod (which helps prevent rust) has wo out.

Rusty water is a serious waing sign and usually means it's time to consider replacing the unit. A plumber can test your water and inspect the heater to confirm the cause.

4. Water Around the Base of the Heater

Any sign of water pooling near your water heater is a red flag. It may indicate a leak from the tank itself or from a failing valve or connection. Even a small drip can eventually lead to significant water damage and mold growth if left unchecked.

Contact a plumbing repair service immediately if you spot moisture. They can determine whether the leak can be fixed or if the tank needs to be replaced.

5. Age of the Water Heater

Most water heaters last between 8 to 12 years with proper maintenance. If your unit is within or beyond this range, it’s more likely to experience failures. Even if it’s still functioning, it may not be operating efficiently.

A licensed plumber can evaluate whether upgrading to a newer, more energy-efficient model could save you money in the long run.

6. Higher Utility Bills

An aging or malfunctioning water heater has to work harder to heat the same amount of water. This extra strain can lead to higher energy bills. If you've noticed a spike in your gas or electric bill and can’t explain it, your water heater might be the culprit. Regular maintenance or timely repairs can restore efficiency and keep your energy costs under control.

Call Mr. Rooter Plumbing Before It Fails Completely
