Is Your Washer Leaking from the Bottom? Here's How to Fix It

As much as the regular washing machines are a convenience in our lives that most of us can’t do without, if it’s creating a set of issues like leaking, it’s going to be just as big of an inconvenience. A leaking washing machine will force you to clean the floors every time after a wash; it will not wash your clothes properly and will only waste a nonrenewable source like water and your money. If the reason behind the leak is simple, you may be able to fix it at home. However, if it’s more complicated or something you don’t want to handle on your own, you can always call the professional plumbers of Mr. Rooter Plumbing for water leak repair.

Reasons Behind The Leaks

In order to fix the problem, first, it’s essential to understand why the washer is leaking.

Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.

Little Silver Township

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

Brick Township, NJ

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

Is Your Washer Leaking from the Bottom? Here’s How to Fix It

  • If the washing machine is leaking from the bottom while filling, this can be due to a damaged tub seal, which should be replaced. Washing machines typically have two tubs: an inner tub that rotates to enable water to pass and the outer tub that supports the inner tub and holds water during the cycle. If there’s a problem in the outer tub, it can cause leakage.
  • If the washing machine is leaking from the bottom during the spin cycle, this can be caused by the drain pipe, which is in charge of discharging unclean water. If this pipe cracks or becomes loose, you will see leakage. However, it can also be caused if the drain pipe is clogged.

How To Fix The Issue?

Here are some of the steps you can take if you notice water pooling around your washer.

Faulty Gaskets

The function of the gaskets is providing adequate protection against water infiltration. However, with time, this component can be wo out, causing a water leak. To fix this, remove the front cover and tighten the bolts that hold the gasket. But if the damage is more severe, then replacements might be needed.

Cleaning The Filter

This is a very easy but often missed part. Cleaning the filter of the washer is quite important to not face any type of problems. You can find the filter usually on the drum’s edge or at the end of the drain hose.

Leaky Pump

If you are dealing with a leaky pump, you can get a new pump from online or home improvement retailers. After getting your replacement washing machine pumps, disconnect the power and water supply, and tilt the machine back so you can have easy access to the bottom of it and make sure to stabilize it. Use pliers to release the clamps holding the hoses to the pump, then take them off. To remember how the electrical cords are connected to the pump, take a picture and then unplug them. Afterwards, unscrew the pump, remove it, and replace it with the new one. Reconnect all of the hoses and finally open the picture you took earlier to connect the electrical cables. Put everything else back in its place and tighten them. Afterwards you can see if you did it correctly by tuing on the washer.

Balance

This is an unexpected but common reason why your washer may be leaking. If the machine is imbalanced, it can vibrate excessively, causing water to pour onto the floor. Check if the washer is balanced, and if it’s not, adjust the washer's feet or consider purchasing anti-vibration cushions.
