Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

How to Read Your Water Meter to Detect Hidden Leaks

  • Outside: In a concrete or plastic box near the curb or sidewalk.
  • Inside: In colder climates, it may be found in a basement, utility closet, or garage to prevent freezing.

Once you find it, remove the cover and wipe away any dirt or condensation so you can clearly see the dial.

Step 2: Understand the Water Meter Display

Most residential water meters in the U.S. are either analog or digital.

  • Analog meters have a round dial with a sweeping hand, like a clock. They also feature a series of numbers similar to an odometer, measuring total water usage in gallons or cubic feet.
  • Digital meters display water usage electronically and often have a leak detection symbol, such as a dripping faucet icon.

The sweeping hand on an analog meter measures smaller amounts of water. If it’s moving when all your water is tued off, it could be a clear sign of a leak.

Step 3: Perform a Simple Leak Test

To check for hidden leaks using your water meter:

  • Tu off all water sources in your home, including faucets, dishwashers, washing machines, and sprinkler systems.
  • Check the leak indicator: Many meters have a small red or triangular dial that spins when water is flowing. If it’s moving while everything is off, you likely have a leak.
  • Take a meter reading and write it down.
  • Wait 30 to 60 minutes without using any water.
  • Read the meter again. If the numbers have changed, that means water is flowing somewhere — likely from a hidden leak.

Step 4: Narrow Down the Source

Once you’ve confirmed there’s a leak, you can try to isolate the location.

  • Check toilets first — they’re one of the most common culprits. Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait 10–15 minutes. If color appears in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is likely leaking.
  • Inspect faucets and showerheads for drips.
  • Listen for hissing or dripping sounds around appliances and under sinks.
  • Look for signs of moisture on walls, ceilings, or floors.

If you can’t locate the problem area, it’s time to call a licensed plumber at Mr. Rooter Plumbing for professional leak detection in Jackson Township.

Why Professional Leak Detection Matters

Even small leaks can lead to major structural damage and mold growth over time. Professional plumbers use advanced leak detection tools like acoustic sensors, infrared cameras, and pressure testing to find leaks that are invisible to the naked eye. Hiring a plumbing repair service early can save you thousands in future repairs — and help conserve water.

When to Call a Plumber

If your water meter confirms a leak but you can’t find the source, or if you notice signs like low water pressure, musty smells, or mold, don’t delay. A certified plumber at Mr. Rooter Plumbing can quickly diagnose and fix the issue using non-invasive techniques.

Take Control of Your Water Use

Leaing to read your water meter is a simple but powerful tool for maintaining your home. It allows you to catch problems early, reduce your water bill, and avoid costly repairs. If your meter indicates a leak, take action immediately — whether it’s a simple DIY fix or time to call in a professional plumber. By being proactive, you’ll protect your home, wallet, and peace of mind.
