Going on vacation is all about relaxing and enjoying a break from the daily grind—but the last thing you want to retu to is a plumbing disaster. A small leak or unnoticed issue can quickly tu into major water damage if left unchecked while you're away. Fortunately, a few simple steps can help prevent problems. Here's how to prepare your plumbing before you go on vacation, and why reaching out to a trusted plumber at Mr. Rooter Plumbing can be a smart move.
One of the most effective ways to prevent plumbing problems while you're away is to shut off the main water valve. This stops water from flowing into your home’s pipes, which means no unexpected leaks or bursts can occur. If a pipe does fail for any reason, tuing off the water ensures you won’t retu to flooding or major water damage.
It was a late Saturday night. We had a super stubborn clog in some old galvanized pipes. Mr. Rooter send out Phil. Phil was great! He found the problem pretty quick. With determination and professionalism he final got it cleared out. I would recommend Mr. Rooter and Phil to anyone! He even cleaned up. We are so happy we choose Mr. Rooter!
We had a plumbing emergency and found Mr. Rooter while frantically searching for a 24-hour plumber. We feel like we hit a gold mine. Not only did we get a timely response. Everyone at Mr. Rooter was friendly, professional, competent and went above and beyond. Our plumber, Phil, was extremely helpful and gave us tips we could use moving firwars. Not to mention, the cost was extremely reasonable.
Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.
Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.
I just wanted to say James did a great job at my house. Excellent service, professional and very nice. Thank you so much for helping me with my plumbing problem. Did wonderful job.
I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.
A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.
You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!
If you're unsure where your main shut-off valve is or how to use it, a licensed plumber in Marlboro Township can show you or even install an easy-access shutoff for future trips.
Before heading out, take a little time to inspect your plumbing fixtures for leaks. Check under sinks, around toilets, behind appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, and near your water heater. Even a slow drip can waste gallons of water and cause water damage over time.
If you notice any signs of a leak—like water stains, musty smells, or dampness—schedule a visit from a plumbing repair service. Fixing small problems now is much easier than dealing with expensive repairs later.
Outdoor plumbing is particularly vulnerable, especially during winter travel. Drain any hoses and disconnect them from outdoor faucets to prevent freezing or cracks. If the weather will be cold while you're away, you might also want to cover exterior faucets with insulated covers to protect them from freezing.
Your water heater doesn’t need to keep heating water at full capacity while no one’s home. Most mode water heaters have a “vacation” mode or a temperature dial you can tu down to save energy. This reduces wear and tear on the unit and lowers your utility bills.
If your water heater is older and doesn’t have this setting, you might want to ask a plumbing repair service if it’s time for an upgrade to a more efficient model.
Clean your drains and garbage disposal before you leave. Food scraps left in the disposal can rot and create foul odors. Similarly, clogged drains can become worse over time, especially if water is sitting in them while you're gone.
Flush your drains with hot water and a mixture of vinegar and baking soda for a natural clean. Run your garbage disposal with a few ice cubes and lemon peels to clear residue and leave it smelling fresh.
If you're planning an extended vacation or leaving your home unattended for weeks, it’s worth having a plumber perform a quick inspection. An expert from Mr. Rooter Plumbing can check for signs of wear, corrosion, or hidden leaks that you may not notice on your own. It’s a small investment that can prevent thousands of dollars in potential damage.
Taking the time to prepare your plumbing before going on vacation is one of the best ways to avoid an unpleasant homecoming. By tuing off your water, inspecting for leaks, adjusting your water heater, and possibly hiring a plumbing repair service for a pre-trip inspection, you’re protecting your home and your peace of mind.
Before you pack your bags and set out to leave, take a walk through your home, check your plumbing, and, if needed, call a reliable plumber from Mr. Rooter Plumbing to make sure everything’s in good shape. Your home—and your future self—will thank you.
