How to Open a Water Heater Pressure Relief Valve

A water heater pressure relief valve, also known as a T&P valve, is a crucial safety component located somewhere near the top of your water heater. The valve, as the name suggests, relieves excess pressure in the water heater tank when necessary. When you lift the lever, the valve should open, allowing water to flow out if it's working correctly.

Where Is The Water Heater Pressure Relief Valve Located?

The water heater pressure relief valve is located on the side or top of the tank, depending on the water heater’s design. The valve is usually labeled with the pressure and temperature settings at which it will open. You’ll see markings like 150 psi or 210°F on the side of the valve body, which indicate the valve’s specifications. The valve is connected to an outlet pipe, which directs the released water and steam to a safe location outside the building or into a floor drain. If you are having trouble locating the T&P valve, refer to your water heater's user manual or installation guide. The manual should provide detailed information on the location of the valve and other important components.

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

How to Open a Water Heater Pressure Relief Valve

The T&P valve should be tested periodically (at least once a year) to ensure it is functioning correctly. Regular testing helps ensure that the valve can release excess pressure and prevent potential hazards. So, it’s important that you know where the valve is located on your water heater and how to open it. If you’re not so familiar with the intricacies of water heaters, you may not know where this valve is located or even how to open it.

Important Note

When locating the T&P valve, be cautious of hot surfaces and the potential for hot water or steam to be released when testing the valve. Ensure the water heater has not been in operation recently or that the water is not scalding hot when testing the valve.

Always prioritize safety when dealing with water heaters. If you are unsure about locating the valve or need assistance with any water heater-related task, it's advisable to consult a professional plumbing service for help. Here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we are here to help if you need assistance locating the T&P valve on your water heater.

How to Open T&P Valve

Opening the T&P valve is a straightforward process. All you need to do is gently lift the lever upward. The lever should move freely without excessive force. Do not lift the lever too forcefully to avoid damaging the valve. When you lift the lever, you should see water flowing out through the outlet pipe. After a brief discharge, slowly release the lever to close the valve. Ensure that the T&P valve has closed completely after releasing the lever. There should be no continuous flow of water from the valve after you release the lever.

If there is no discharge, the T&P valve might be stuck, blocked, or not functioning correctly. A malfunctioning T&P valve can compromise the safety of your water heater and your home. For safety reasons, it's recommended to have the T&P valve inspected and maintained regularly by a qualified plumber.
