How to Keep Your Pipes from Freezing?

When temperatures drop below freezing, the chances of your pipes freezing and bursting are eminent. At the highest risk of freezing are pipes in unheated interior spaces, such as the basement, attic, or garage, and those running against exterior walls. Freezing and bursting pipes are a common plumbing problem property owners experience during wintertime. The good news is that you can take preventative measures to reduce the risk of frozen water pipes when the temperatures plummet.

Seal Any Air Leaks

Inspect your home for any cracks, gaps, or openings that could let in cold exterior air. Check around places where pipes run through exterior and interior walls, around electrical wiring, windows and door frames, sill plates, and dryer vents. This helps keep warm air contained and prevents cold air from getting into your home. Use caulk or spray foam insulation to seal the cracks, gaps, or openings. Keeping the garage door closed can also keep warm air contained in your house and prevent freezing air from getting in.

Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.

Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.

Brick Township, NJ

A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.

You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!

How to Keep Your Pipes from Freezing?

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we’ve put together a number of tips to prevent frozen pipes and ward off water damage when temperatures drop.

Insulate Your Pipes

Pipe insulation is an effective way to prevent frozen pipes. Consider insulating pipes located in unheated spaces like the basement, attic, and garage. The pipes can be fitted with fiberglass sleeves or foam rubber to provide a buffer against subzero temperatures. This method is fairly inexpensive and effective for preventing frozen pipes. Wrapping short sections of pipes in electrical heating tape can also help prevent freezing. If you need help with pipe insulation or pipe replacement, reach out to Mr. Rooter Plumbing.

Open Kitchen and Bathroom Cabinet Doors

Pipes are often located in cabinets. To prevent burst pipes, periodically open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors so that the heat from the rest of the house can circulate beneath the cabinets and keep the pipes warm.

Leave The Faucets Running for A While

Another effective way to keep your pipes from freezing is to allow faucets fed by exposed piping to trickle just a bit. The constant flow of water through the pipes relieves pressure buildup, thereby keeping your pipes from freezing.

Keep The Thermostat Consistent

Even though the Department of Energy advises homeowners to adjust their thermostats during cold weather to save on energy bills, that recommendation doesn’t apply when the temperature drops below freezing. It’s advisable to keep your thermostat set to the same temperature to keep your pipes warm even when the temperatures plummet. If you plan to be away from home during the winter, set your thermostat to at least 55 ?.
