A dip tube is a long plastic tube that extends from the cold water inlet at the top of the tank to near the bottom of the tank. The role of a dip tube in a water heater is to bring in cold water and push it to the bottom of the tank, where it gets heated by the heating element or buer. Just like the other parts of a water heater, the dip tube can fail as a result of age, mineral buildup, high water pressure, and other reasons.
It was a late Saturday night. We had a super stubborn clog in some old galvanized pipes. Mr. Rooter send out Phil. Phil was great! He found the problem pretty quick. With determination and professionalism he final got it cleared out. I would recommend Mr. Rooter and Phil to anyone! He even cleaned up. We are so happy we choose Mr. Rooter!
We had a plumbing emergency and found Mr. Rooter while frantically searching for a 24-hour plumber. We feel like we hit a gold mine. Not only did we get a timely response. Everyone at Mr. Rooter was friendly, professional, competent and went above and beyond. Our plumber, Phil, was extremely helpful and gave us tips we could use moving firwars. Not to mention, the cost was extremely reasonable.
Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.
Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.
I just wanted to say James did a great job at my house. Excellent service, professional and very nice. Thank you so much for helping me with my plumbing problem. Did wonderful job.
I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.
A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.
You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!
When a dip tube fails, it can result in reduced hot water output and efficiency because incoming cold water mixes with the hot water at the top of the tank rather than being distributed to the bottom for heating. If you notice a gradual reduction in the hot water temperature or fluctuating water temperature, it could be a sign that the dip tube is deteriorating. The good news is that changing a failing dip tube is quite easy. Here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we offer a comprehensive range of water heater services, including water heater installation, water heater repair, and water heater inspection. In this post, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to change a dip tube.
The first step is to ensure your safety. Tu off the power to the water heater by switching off the circuit breaker or shutting down the gas supply if your heater is gas-powered. Safety should always be a top priority.
Locate the cold-water inlet valve on the water heater, usually located at the top. Tu it off to stop the flow of water into the tank.
Using a wrench, carefully disconnect the cold-water supply line that is connected to the water heater. Make sure you have a bucket or towels handy to catch any water that may drain from the line.
To access the dip tube, you'll need to remove the nipple that covers it. Use a pipe wrench or pliers to carefully remove the nipple. This may require a bit of force, so be cautious.
With the nipple removed, gently pull out the old dip tube from inside the water heater. It may be wo or deteriorated, and this is the part you'll be replacing.
Take the new dip tube and insert it into the opening where the old one was removed. Ensure it goes in securely and fits snugly.
Once the new dip tube is in place, reattach the nipple that covers it. Tighten it securely, but be careful not to over-tighten. Reconnect the cold-water supply line and tighten it as well.
Finally, tu the cold-water inlet valve back on to restore the water supply to the tank. If you had tued off the power or gas, remember to tu it back on as well.
There you have it. These are the eight steps to follow to replace a dip tube in a water heater. If you have any doubts about carrying out this procedure, it’s recommended that you seek assistance from a reputable plumbing service. Here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we are ready to help you with all of your water heater needs, including water heater repair and replacement. Whether you need help with replacing a dip tube or it’s time to install a new water heater, our knowledgeable and experienced plumbers have what it takes to get the job done right.
