After cooking a delicious meal, many people are tempted to pour leftover cooking oil down the kitchen sink. It might seem harmless—after all, it’s just liquid, right? But ask any professional plumber, and they’ll tell you that pouring oil down the drain is one of the quickest ways to cause serious plumbing issues.
Cooking oil may go down the drain as a liquid, but it doesn't stay that way. As oil cools, it solidifies, especially animal fats like lard or bacon grease. When oil solidifies inside your plumbing system, it can stick to the inner walls of the pipes. Over time, this builds up and traps food particles, soap residue, and other debris.
It was a late Saturday night. We had a super stubborn clog in some old galvanized pipes. Mr. Rooter send out Phil. Phil was great! He found the problem pretty quick. With determination and professionalism he final got it cleared out. I would recommend Mr. Rooter and Phil to anyone! He even cleaned up. We are so happy we choose Mr. Rooter!
We had a plumbing emergency and found Mr. Rooter while frantically searching for a 24-hour plumber. We feel like we hit a gold mine. Not only did we get a timely response. Everyone at Mr. Rooter was friendly, professional, competent and went above and beyond. Our plumber, Phil, was extremely helpful and gave us tips we could use moving firwars. Not to mention, the cost was extremely reasonable.
Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.
Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.
I just wanted to say James did a great job at my house. Excellent service, professional and very nice. Thank you so much for helping me with my plumbing problem. Did wonderful job.
I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.
A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.
You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!
Whether it's vegetable oil, bacon grease, or used fryer oil, disposing of it improperly can lead to clogged pipes, costly repairs, and even damage to your local sewer system. In this article, we’ll explain why you should never pour oil down the drain, how improper disposal affects your plumbing, and safe ways to get rid of oil.
Eventually, this creates a stubbo clog that could completely block your pipes. If you’re lucky, a store-bought drain cleaner might help. But more often than not, you’ll need to call a plumber or a drain cleaning service to clear the blockage professionally.
Beyond the inconvenience and cost of a clog, pouring oil down the drain has broader consequences. When grease and oil reach municipal sewer systems, they contribute to “fatbergs”—massive buildups of fat, oil, and other waste that can block entire sections of a sewer line.
These blockages can cause sewage to back up into homes or overflow into local waterways, posing serious environmental and health risks. That’s why many cities have strict regulations about disposing of grease and require restaurants to install grease traps and follow proper disposal protocols.
Homeowners aren’t immune to these issues. In fact, many calls for plumbing repair services are related to improper oil disposal. The costs of these repairs can add up quickly, especially if the problem is severe enough to require pipe replacement or excavation.
To avoid costly plumbing repairs and protect your home’s plumbing system, here are some safe and easy ways to dispose of cooking oil.
If you’ve poured oil down the drain in the past and are now experiencing slow drains, foul odors, or gurgling sounds, you may already have a clog forming. In that case, it’s time to call a professional drain cleaning service. Using specialized equipment, plumbers in Monroe Twp can remove built-up grease and debris without damaging your pipes.
Routine drain cleaning is also a great preventative measure. Even if your drains seem fine now, regular maintenance can help catch problems early and extend the life of your plumbing system.
Pouring oil down the drain may seem like an easy way to clean up after cooking, but it’s a habit that can lead to serious plumbing problems and environmental damage. With so many safe and easy disposal options available, there’s no reason to take the risk.
When in doubt, play it safe—dispose of oil properly, and if your drains show signs of trouble, call a reliable plumber from Mr. Rooter Plumbing. Protect your home, your pipes, and your wallet by keeping grease where it belongs: out of your plumbing system.
