Tuing on the tap and seeing cloudy or milky water can be a bit alarming. While it’s often harmless, cloudy water can be a sign that something’s wrong with your plumbing or water supply. Whether it's a temporary issue or something that requires professional attention, understanding the root cause can help you decide when it's time to call a plumber or schedule a plumbing repair service. Here are six common reasons your tap water might be cloudy—and what you can do about it.
One of the most common causes of cloudy tap water is air bubbles. When air gets trapped in your plumbing system—usually after maintenance or a recent change in water pressure—it can cause the water to look cloudy or milky. The good news? This type of cloudiness usually clears up on its own after a few seconds in a glass. If it does, it’s just air and nothing to worry about.
It was a late Saturday night. We had a super stubborn clog in some old galvanized pipes. Mr. Rooter send out Phil. Phil was great! He found the problem pretty quick. With determination and professionalism he final got it cleared out. I would recommend Mr. Rooter and Phil to anyone! He even cleaned up. We are so happy we choose Mr. Rooter!
We had a plumbing emergency and found Mr. Rooter while frantically searching for a 24-hour plumber. We feel like we hit a gold mine. Not only did we get a timely response. Everyone at Mr. Rooter was friendly, professional, competent and went above and beyond. Our plumber, Phil, was extremely helpful and gave us tips we could use moving firwars. Not to mention, the cost was extremely reasonable.
Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.
Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.
I just wanted to say James did a great job at my house. Excellent service, professional and very nice. Thank you so much for helping me with my plumbing problem. Did wonderful job.
I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.
A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.
You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!
Hard water is water that has a high concentration of dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. While not typically harmful to your health, these minerals can cause cloudiness and leave deposits on faucets and dishes. Over time, hard water can lead to buildup in pipes and appliances, which may require a plumbing repair service to address. Installing a water softener can help reduce these issues.
If your water comes from a well or a municipal source with aging infrastructure, sediment can occasionally find its way into your tap water. Dirt, sand, and other particles can make your water appear cloudy. If sediment is the culprit, it’s a good idea to have a plumber inspect your plumbing system and possibly install a filtration system to keep your water clean and clear.
If the cloudy water only appears when using hot water, your water heater may be to blame. Sediment buildup inside the tank can mix with the water and cause cloudiness. Regular maintenance, including flushing the tank, can help avoid this problem. If the issue persists, it might be time to have a plumbing repair service take a closer look at your water heater.
Old or corroded pipes can release rust and other particles into your water, leading to discoloration and cloudiness. If you notice a metallic taste or orange and brown tints in addition to cloudiness, corroded pipes may be the issue. This is not something to ignore, as it can lead to leaks or pipe failure. A licensed plumber at Mr. Rooter Plumbing can inspect your pipes and recommend the best course of action, which may include pipe replacement.
Sometimes, the problem isn’t in your home at all. Municipal water suppliers occasionally flush their systems or perform repairs that stir up sediment and introduce air into the lines. This can lead to temporary cloudiness in your tap water. Typically, this will clear up on its own within a few hours. If the issue continues for more than a day, it’s a good idea to contact your water supplier or call a plumber to rule out problems in your own system.
While cloudy water isn’t always a cause for conce, it’s important to pay attention to changes in water quality. If the cloudiness persists, or if it’s accompanied by a bad smell, odd taste, or discoloration, it’s time to call a plumbing repair service. A professional plumber in Oakhurst, NJ at Mr. Rooter Plumbing can identify the root cause of the issue and recommend the right fix—whether it’s installing a filtration system, replacing corroded pipes, or flushing your water heater. Keeping your water clear and safe is essential for everyday life. Don’t ignore the signs—when in doubt, it’s always best to let a professional take a look.
