Most of us don’t spend a lot of time thinking about our plumbing—until something goes wrong. Then it’s all hands on deck trying to stop leaks, unclog drains, or call a plumber for an emergency plumbing repair service. But what if you could avoid a lot of these issues just by changing a few habits? Believe it or not, many common plumbing problems come from simple mistakes homeowners don’t even realize they’re making. Here are five plumbing mistakes you might be guilty of—and how to fix them before they cause bigger trouble.
Your home’s plumbing system is one of its most important (and expensive) components. Treating it with a little care can save you a lot of headaches, money, and emergency calls for plumbing repair service. By avoiding these common mistakes—and knowing when to call a professional from Mr. Rooter Plumbing—you’ll help keep your pipes flowing smoothly for years. And if you ever find yourself in over your head, don’t worry—your local plumber is just a phone call away.
It was a late Saturday night. We had a super stubborn clog in some old galvanized pipes. Mr. Rooter send out Phil. Phil was great! He found the problem pretty quick. With determination and professionalism he final got it cleared out. I would recommend Mr. Rooter and Phil to anyone! He even cleaned up. We are so happy we choose Mr. Rooter!
We had a plumbing emergency and found Mr. Rooter while frantically searching for a 24-hour plumber. We feel like we hit a gold mine. Not only did we get a timely response. Everyone at Mr. Rooter was friendly, professional, competent and went above and beyond. Our plumber, Phil, was extremely helpful and gave us tips we could use moving firwars. Not to mention, the cost was extremely reasonable.
Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.
Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.
I just wanted to say James did a great job at my house. Excellent service, professional and very nice. Thank you so much for helping me with my plumbing problem. Did wonderful job.
I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.
A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.
You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!
It’s tempting to flush things like wipes, paper towels, feminine products, or even dental floss down the toilet. After all, it’s out of sight, out of mind, right? Unfortunately, flushing anything besides toilet paper can cause serious clogs in your pipes and even damage your septic system if you have one. Even products labeled "flushable" don’t break down the same way toilet paper does. Over time, they can create stubbo blockages that require a professional plumbing repair service to clear.
The Fix: Only flush toilet paper and human waste. Keep a small trash can in the bathroom for everything else.
After cooking, it’s easy to pour leftover grease down the drain without a second thought. But as grease cools, it solidifies—and that sticky, thick residue can coat your pipes and cause major blockages. This mistake is one of the leading causes of kitchen drain clogs that end with an urgent call to a plumber.
The Fix: Pour grease into a can or jar and throw it away once it hardens. Never send it down the sink, even with hot water.
A slow drip under the sink or a constantly running toilet might not seem like a big deal. However, even small leaks waste a surprising amount of water and can cause significant damage over time. Water pooling under sinks can lead to mold growth, warped cabinetry, and expensive repairs that could have been avoided with early intervention.
The Fix: Don’t ignore small leaks. If you notice a drip, loose fitting, or unusual water bill spike, call a trusted plumber from Mr. Rooter Plumbing to check it out before it tus into a major issue.
It seems logical; the tighter you screw something on, the less likely it will leak, right? Actually, overtightening plumbing fixtures like faucet handles, pipe connections, or toilet bolts can crack fittings and strip threads, leading to even bigger leaks down the road.
The Fix: Tighten connections just enough to create a good seal. If you’re unsure, it’s better to consult a plumbing repair service than risk breaking something and creating a bigger problem.
We love a good DIY project as much as anyone, but plumbing isn’t always the best place to wing it. What looks like a simple job—like replacing a faucet or unclogging a drain—can quickly escalate if you don’t have the right tools or know-how. Mistakes can lead to leaks, water damage, or even code violations that cost more to fix later.
The Fix: Know your limits. If a project seems complicated, or if you’re unsure how to shut off your water supply or properly install a fixture, it’s time to bring in a professional plumber.
