Your kitchen sink might seem like a catch-all for cooking waste and cleanup, but treating it that way is a fast track to plumbing trouble. Many homeowners don’t realize that everyday substances can wreak havoc on their pipes, leading to clogs, foul odors, and expensive plumbing repair services. To avoid the hassle of a clogged drain cleaning or an emergency call to the plumber in New Jersey, it’s crucial to know what should never go down your kitchen drain.
One of the most damaging things you can pour down your kitchen sink is grease. After cooking, it may seem convenient to dispose of leftover bacon grease, butter, or cooking oil by washing it down the drain. But as these substances cool, they solidify and stick to the walls of your pipes. Over time, this buildup narrows the passageways and traps other debris, leading to a major clog.
It was a late Saturday night. We had a super stubborn clog in some old galvanized pipes. Mr. Rooter send out Phil. Phil was great! He found the problem pretty quick. With determination and professionalism he final got it cleared out. I would recommend Mr. Rooter and Phil to anyone! He even cleaned up. We are so happy we choose Mr. Rooter!
We had a plumbing emergency and found Mr. Rooter while frantically searching for a 24-hour plumber. We feel like we hit a gold mine. Not only did we get a timely response. Everyone at Mr. Rooter was friendly, professional, competent and went above and beyond. Our plumber, Phil, was extremely helpful and gave us tips we could use moving firwars. Not to mention, the cost was extremely reasonable.
Had sewer water backup in toilet and tub. Received callback as promised and arrived early. The tech determined we needed the main line to be cleared. He quickly located the opening and had us cleared in minutes. Very happy with the service. I was not prepared for the fee but it was an emergency.
Plumber, Phil, came out on short notice on a Saturday night and fixed our issue quickly, professionally and courteously. I contacted a different, well known plumbing company right before Mr. Rooter. The receptionist was rude and they didn’t call me back to say they couldn’t make it until after Phil left! The Mr. Rooter receptionist was very nice and they called me back quickly. I’m glad they did.
I just wanted to say James did a great job at my house. Excellent service, professional and very nice. Thank you so much for helping me with my plumbing problem. Did wonderful job.
I was very happy that I went with Mr. Rooter’s. The service was very quick and up front. Jessie James was very helpful answering my questions and replacing my hot water heater. He was pleasurable to do business with. If another problem arises in my home, I will be using this company again.
A thorough, professional, pleasant experience. I had a back-up in the 50 year-old pipes of my new home. I called Mr. Rooter to have them locate the blockage, snake the line, and then use their video snake to get a visual of the integrity of the pipes. I’m glad that I called and will use them again for future needs.
You get what you pay for. Edwin Robles of Central NJ educated me as a 1st time homebuyer on why and what he was repairing, prevention, PROMPT,(on a sunday at that!) clean, knowledgeable, super professional but DOWN TO EARTH and at a REASONABLE PRICE! Sewer pipes unclogged and main water line fixed. I was no longer crying once job was thoroughly executed. After all $#@* $tinks but somebody has to do it and I HIGHLY recommend him and this company for a job well done. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Absolutely lovely office staff! I always knew when the repair person was coming. Lorenzo our repair guy was awesome, I really don't think there is anything he can't do. He looks young, but don't let that fool you! So happy all the repairs are behind us. We really just did a one-stop shopping and decided to have everything we've put off fixed because it was such a tremendous experience!
Even small amounts of grease added regularly can accumulate and cause a blockage that requires professional clogged drain cleaning. A better approach? Pour cooled grease into a sealed container and throw it in the trash. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them to minimize the residue going down the drain.
They might look harmless, but coffee grounds are one of the top offenders in household drain clogs. Unlike other organic materials, coffee grounds don’t break down in water. Instead, they clump together and form a sludgy mess that sticks to other debris inside your pipes.
Many plumbers can confirm that coffee grounds are a leading cause of drain backups in kitchens. To prevent this issue, compost your grounds or throw them in the trash. If you’re a daily coffee drinker, keeping them out of the drain could save you from frequent visits from your local plumbing repair service.
Eggshells may seem fragile enough to flush down the drain, but they can cause more harm than you think. The sharp edges of the shells can combine with grease and other food particles to form tough, gritty clogs. If you have a garbage disposal, eggshells can also damage the blades and lead to costly repairs.
A common myth is that eggshells sharpen garbage disposal blades—this simply isn’t true. The reality is that they increase the risk of damage and can lead to unnecessary service calls. Instead, toss eggshells into the trash or compost bin where they can break down naturally.
Starchy foods such as pasta, rice, and potato peels are sneaky drain cloggers. When wet, these items expand and become gummy, sticking to the sides of pipes and trapping other waste. Over time, this builds into a thick blockage that can stop your kitchen sink from draining properly.
Even with a garbage disposal, these foods don’t break down well and often lead to slow drains or full-on clogs. If you’re dealing with sluggish draining and suspect starchy buildup, it’s best to call a plumber before the issue worsens. In some cases, professional clogged drain cleaning in Rumson Township is the only way to restore full function to your plumbing system.
Maintaining a clean, functional kitchen drain isn’t just about convenience—it’s about protecting your home’s plumbing system. Avoiding these four common culprits—grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, and starchy foods—can significantly reduce your risk of needing a plumbing repair service.
When in doubt, remember: if it’s not water or a truly biodegradable liquid, it probably doesn’t belong down your sink. And if you ever do encounter a stubbo clog, don’t hesitate to contact a professional plumber from Mr. Rooter Plumbing for expert clogged drain cleaning and repair. A small bit of prevention today can save you from a costly plumbing disaster tomorrow.
